RegCure – Quick Overview

RegCure is another very good registry cleaner which enjoys about as much popularity as Registry Easy, if not more.

This registry cleaner is using very recent technology in registry cleaning and has been created to provide computer users with some of the best prevention and maintenance tools available today.

There is really no such thing as a 3rd party "Registry Editor" software, and there is also no need for it:

Every windows, even from the earliest windows versions on, comes with a built in registry editor which is regedit.

Now, a word of caution first: Editing the registry manually is something you should not do if you don't know exactly what you are doing. A wrong modification using the windows regedit tool can break functionality of your programs – if not your whole computer! Always perform a backup of the registry first before you do any changes in the registry!

How do you start regedit, the windows registry editor?

Simple: On your computer, you select Start -> Run (On Vista Win7 click on the symbol in left lower corner) and then type regedit which will start the built in registry editor. It might look like on the picture on the left.

Now, be warned that we have literally thousands of entries here. Simply searching for a text-string (press CTRL-F key) in the registry could take a minute or two, even on a fast computer.

The registry is structured and laid out with what Microsoft calls Registry Hives. We have a few main registry hives which are

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
HKEY_USERS
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG

Simple spoken: Most (if not all) of your settings for Windows, drivers and your applications might be somewhere saved amongst thousands of thousands of entries somewhere in the registry.

In the menu of the editor, you can see some options for importing and exporting the registry (or parts of it).

And of  course you can add and actually edit particular entries (called registry keys) by simply right clicking, or clicking on the entry in question.

A value can be changed in the box which pops up when you click an entry in the right window of the registry editor, while the left side displays the hives and the overall structure of the registry.

There are various kinds of data, like strings, binary value, DWORD and more. A string would simple be a text, an example would be the pathname for an installed program.

It would go way too far now to give an in-depth explanation of how the registry is built up and what relationships there are. This article's purpose is merely to show that each windows has this built-in registry editor and how to start it for those interested.

A registry checker is another term for registry cleaner software.

How does a registry checker work?

The registry checker is scanning the thousands and thousands of entries in the windows registry and double checks and references it to existing files. It can find errors and fix them.

For example, the PC registry might contain an invalid entry pointing to system file on your computer. But an application was removed and uninstalled, but it left the entry in the registry, now pointing to a file which does not exist anymore.

The registry checker will detect this and give you the option to automatically or manually delete the orphaned entry.

There can be many thousands of such useless and orphaned entries, pointing to files which don't exist anymore, or deleted fonts and so on.

The worst case scenario is if an entry in the registry points to a file which is damaged, or a system file which might cause blues screens.

Registry cleaners and checkers can have a variety of scan levels, with some of the tools doing only a mild scan and barely really "repairing" anything in the registry. Other registry checkers can go much deeper and perform an in-depth scanning of operating system related registry entries and finding much more errors than other registry cleaners.

ERUNT and NTREGOPT are two extremely useful tools you can use for your registry.

Those are not registry cleaners *per se* and they wont fix errors, but ERUNT is one of the best programs to schedule automatic registry backups, it also allows manual backups on demand.

NTREGOPT is a tool which can "defragment" and shrink your registry.

I am using ERUNT myself for years – it also works on Vista and Win7, even under 64bit.

How it works: With Erunt your PC performs an automatic registry backup every day which it saves to your C: drive under C:\Windows\ERDNT. For each day it creates a folder with the date as file name. You have the option to specify the days to keep, by default it keeps the last 30 days.

You can also make a quick command/batch and name it "Backup Now", so it would immediately backup your complete registry on demand.

I put this in my computer's start-menu, and every time i change something in my registry i can click on this and it saves the complete registry in a folder with Date/Time.

Now, here's why ERUNT is extremely nice:

In each of those backup folders it also puts an *.exe file which automatically restores the saved registry.

If you have a total PC crash with a corrupted registry, you can boot into safe mode or even from a DOS disk..and then you go into the folder where the backup is.

You simply execute the *.exe and your complete registry is restored!
